Course Summary:

In 2017 the World Workshop on Periodontology updated the 1999 classification on Periodontal diseases on Conditions and added a section to the classification on Peri-implant diseases and conditions. The goal of the Workshop was to establish case definitions and provide diagnostic criteria to use in the new classification. The objective of this course is to review the new 2017 classification and contrast it to the 1999 classification by Armitage and ways this classification affects categorizing periodontal diseases. The goal of the course is also to evaluate new ways of categorizing periodontal disease using “staging” and “grading” to provide dental hygienists about information on the new case type definitions that would be valuable information for them in rendering non-surgical periodontal therapy for patients, as well as when referring patients or instituting supportive periodontal maintenance therapy following active therapy by dentists and periodontists.
