Course Summary:
Goals of active periodontal therapy involving non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy include: prevention and halting of periodontal disease progression, reduction or elimination of inflammation, reduction in deep probing depth, regaining attachment around teeth and prevention of tooth loss and loss of dental function.
Studies have shown that probing depth levels of 6mm or more and bleeding index score of more than 30% presents a risk for tooth loss for patients, while shallow pockets that are less than 4mm appear to confer the best chance of stability of periodontal attachment and lowest risk of tooth loss.
The goal of this course is to review non surgical and surgical periodontal therapy used to treat periodontitis including Scaling and root planing and use of antimicrobial agents, Gingival flap procedure, Osseous surgery, Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty, as well as use of Bone grafts, enamel matrix proteins and Guided tissue regeneration, their indications and contraindications for use as well as their overall success in gaining clinical attachment, reducing probing depth, and impact on gingival recession after therapy.
